Gardens are many things to many people. This one was designed as a healing garden.
The plan included favorite plants, grade changes (the newly seeded lawn area was a low point and now higher flows with the existing lawn grade and the ground sloped away in planting area) provided by a low stone wall on the back side. The stone edging reveals the curving line in four seasons and creates an edge that always looks good.
Additional elements included a garden journey suggested by the stepping stone path to a destination– a bench to view (the bench will go in that area to the left beside the white hydrangea and in front of the newly planted blue spruce), and a stone lantern my clients found after much searching that I used to mark the path and provide a connection between the existing large boulder, the dogwood tree, and the arbor. My talented masons cut the stones to surround the lantern so it all just works.
The planting combinations with the border include dwarf conifers, deciduous flowering shrubs, David Austin Roses, perennials, and annuals for four season appeal and a lush joyful abundance with waves of color.
All gardens can provide a place of healing. Really noticing the daily changes, letting yourself breathe deeper and slower, and giving yourself permission to be happy and feel the awesome magic are some key ingredients to health I think. May you all be healthy.
