Elegant Stone Number Piers: A Design Solution for Home Addresses

Have you ever found yourself searching for the house number? It can be nerve wracking. It’s a design problem that I often tackle.

A stone number pier provides an elegant solution to a functional problem. Designing an entry garden that marries it to the landscape creates welcome.

Designing the Number Posts and Wall

This 1800’s farmhouse has a shared history with the Historic Codman House nearby. The pier’s height and width drew inspiration from an old pier. This old structure marked a back road to the historic house. The shape and color of the fieldstone stones also took inspiration from it. Additionally, the bluestone cap’s depth and material were inspired by it. The height and style of the uncapped stone sitting wall were influenced by its scale of the pier height. They were also influenced by the height of the rebuilt and restored historic old wall by the street.

Natural Stone Piers with adjoining sitting walls frame the view of the house and gardens from the street. Designing Four Season Flower Gardens connect the entry gardens to the existing landscape.

Designing the Entry Garden Planting

The original entry garden planting that I’d designed almost 20 years still worked. Yet, it now serves as a backdrop to a new planting. This includes four season low growing broadleaf evergreens. There are also summer blooming white snowball type hydrangeas that bloom in shade. They brighten the shady area. Groundcover type perennials that bunnies and hedgehogs won’t eat add the ground level layer that creates a lush looking garden.

The lawn widens by the posts, which allows one to see the beautiful stone wall. The lawn edge continues the existing lawn edge of the driveway.

The ‘where to put the house number’ solution is a bold, easily read number. Sometimes it is positioned on the house near a light source, or on a light post. And always, house numbers on the mailbox are a must. All those solutions work, the most elegant is the natural Stone Number Pier.
